| The Vision
The Vision to create
a not for profit charitable Foundation came early
on in the setting up of Sanctuary Resorts. After
all one of the main precepts of Sanctuary Resorts
was to create Responsible and Sustainable Tourism
projects which supported and gave back to the
local communities in which the project was located.
As is the way of
the world these days and the mindset of many peoples
around the globe the first step is to prove that
a) you know what you are doing professionally,
and b) that you can make it a successful and profitable
“business” venture.
It appears that
we have satisfied these two criteria for at least
some people interested in what we are doing from
a business perspective, and dare I say, inspired
others to seek a new path or re-energize their
commitment and pursuit on a similar path.
The effects of the
Tsunami on two of our resort projects, which saw
the loss of some of our staff and guests had a
great impact on our organization as a whole, and
dramatically focused us on the need for such a
charitable process within our existing structure
to help those affected by these tragic events,
but also many more who are less fortunate than
ourselves and suffering daily.
We have been overwhelmed
with offers of support and assistance, both financially
and in providing volunteering services.
It is with
these factors in mind that we have been guided
to create The Foundation for International Responsible
and Sustainable Tourism (FIRST). In doing so we
wanted to provide not a “hand out”
to people, but a “hand up”. Our intention
relates to the old adage, “Give a man a
fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man
to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”.
Therefore our focus will be not only to provide
support but also a nucleus of learning and self-sustainable
projects in communities that rely on tourism for
their income, or can benefit from the pursuit
of such developments, while retaining the unique
culture and heritage of their communities.
